Our Very First Pincher

Hello lovely Pinchers!

We’re coming to you this week with an interview from one of our very first Pinchers way back when!

Bianca Linette (@biancalinettehmu) is a hair and makeup artist, based out of Houston, Texas. She’s worked for major brands such as Francesca’s and her work has been featured in W Magazine as well as NylonMag. Her looks vary from a strong blue cat-eyed eyeliner to an ethereal angelic look. But, she has perfected that natural “I Woke Up Like This” look that we all know takes the most time and effort. And honestly, that’s a skill that she’s not only harnessed through hair and makeup but also through her day-to-day life. We talk more about this skill of being at complete peace with herself in our increasingly connected world, where comparing yourself is second nature.

Meghan: As a makeup artist, how do you balance using social media as a tool to find inspiration with falling into the trap of constantly comparing your work to other artists?

Bianca: It’s so hard because to be a great makeup artist, you have to be aware of what’s trending and how others are responding. But there’s a fine line between finding inspiration and becoming negative about your path in comparison to others’. I’ve realized, though, that the only way to benefit from social media is to first, be in a positive place with yourself. Now, I can go to another artist’s page and be able to fully appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into their work. I mean, I even write to people to say “thanks” for sharing their skill and providing inspiration. I think the world would be a better place if we all started to just acknowledge everyone’s successes and skills, without any tinges of jealousy.

Meghan: So true- this sentiment of appreciation needs to be more widespread and all-encompassing.

Bianca: And with appreciation, I always try to center myself with a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for being able to do what I love. And gratitude for the great people that I work with- especially the models. I’ve actually formed some life-long friends with models who inspired me not just with their looks, but with their positivity and depth. And this is weird to say today when everyone seems to be faulting social media, but I AM actually very grateful for social media. It’s a love-hate relationship, but at the end of the day, it has been such a tool to find inspiration and to connect with people. I mean that’s how I connected with Linda [CEO and Founder of Pinch of Colour]!

Meghan: Exactly, it’s not necessarily social media itself that’s inherently bad, it’s more the subconscious mindset when you fall into the comparison trap! But like you said, being in a good relationship with yourself is the foundation for any relationship- including your relationship with social media. So speaking of your personal foundation, what are some causes that you’re passionate about?

Bianca: Animals’ rights for sure! I have a pig, Hank, and a cat, a dog. We’re all one big family, and that’s why when it comes to makeup, I really try to be aware of which brands test on animals.

Meghan: That’s so sweet- like a pet farm! (It is doable, you guys, to have a pig in a big city- prime example here!) Ok, I’m down fawning over Hank, back to the makeup. Which Pinch products are your favorite?

Bianca: Oh easy! The foundation [Honey Silk Waterless Tint] and the oil [Skin Therapy Waterless Face Elixir]. I mean the foundation literally works on EVERYbody- whether the model has oily or dry skin. And even the male models comment on it too! They’re always amazed that they even have any makeup on their face at all.

Meghan: Ha! That’s when you know the product must be doing something right- when a guy comments on it.

But in all seriousness, ultimately, what keeps you motivated?

Bianca: I know who I am, and I know that I want to continue finding inspiration through hair and makeup. It’s what gives me energy.

I had such a great time chatting with Bianca about how it’s so important to establish a positive foundation with yourself and to find what truly gives you energy. You can check out Bianca’s work on her website- www.biancalinette.com .

Let us know, what are some of the ways you maintain a positive energy with yourself? What gives you energy to continue your own passions?
